I’ve Got the Whole World in My Hand

hand.jpg

OK, maybe not the whole world. And maybe that’s not even my hand. :D

However, it IS Sony’s newest handheld, the VAIO VGN-UX390N 4.5″ Notebook PC. And, for the two readers who emailed me after the iPod post not understanding how a piece of technology could be “sexy” - I dare you to contradict me now. :)

keyboard.jpg

How about now?

front.jpg

And…how do ya like me now? :D

All kidding aside, handheld notebooks are not for everyone. Some people (some IGNORANT people! :P) have called them “glorified sidekicks.” BLASPHEMY, I tell you!

This is a fully-functioning 32 gig PC that operates on Windows Vista Business. And it fits in your hand. For a frequent traveler like myself, tell me how that’s not better than sex? :)

Not to mention, when you’re not on the road, drop it in that docking station which would be connected to all your fun perifs (monitor, keyboard, mouse, you get the idea) and it’s like you’re usin’ a desktop.

Here are the high points (ie, the technical specs) -

  • Amazingly small micro PC fits in your hand–4.5 inch LCD touch screen and hidden keyboard
  • 32 GB flash memory storage, 1.33 GHz Ultra Low Voltage Intel Core Solo U1500 processor, 1 GB RAM
  • Tri-mode WiFi (802.11a/b/g), wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) with Cingular SIM card, Bluetooth connectivity
  • One built-in USB 2.0 port and Memory Stick slot; includes port replicator with three USB, one FireWire, Ethernet, VGA out, composite A/V out
  • Product Dimensions: 1.5 x 5.9 x 3.7 inches ; 1.2 pounds
  • Shipping Weight: 4.6 pounds

It currently retails for $2379.99 and I would consider it worth. every. last. dime. :D

Music Monday - SAVE INTERNET RADIO!

Taking my cue from Adam Carolla and company, I have decided to implement “Music Monday” - every Monday there will be a post that involves music somehow. It might be a review of a music tech gadget. It might be me telling you about what I’ve been listening to (ie - what you SHOULD be listening to! :P ). Or, as is the case this week, it might be a piece of tech or music industry news that you need to know about.

I am reposting the following article with permission of acousticvids.com.

(Permission wasn’t actually that hard to get since I also run acousticvids. :P)

As some of you may have heard on NPR’s AirTalk this morning, Congress has issued a ruling that SIGNIFICANTLY increases the fees that are paid by internet broadcasters for streaming media, to the point that small webcasters would be racking up bills that FAR exceed their annual revenue - effectively rendering them bankrupt and, therefore, closed.

If this ruling is allowed to stand, it will be a gigantic blow to independant music. Internet radio will have to chase advertisers with a budget hefty enough to pay these gargantuan bills, and therefore indie and experimental music will cease to become a part of their playlist.

Basically, internet radio will start to sound a lot like terrestrial radio. And we all know how much that sucks, right?

Here is a page that gives a simple, straightforward, easy-to-read overview of the situation - live365.com/choice

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
(taken from the above link)
-Send a stamped letter, mailed by U.S. Mail or FedEx to your congressperson (find their mailing address). This type of hand-written message with your own personal story is treated with a LOT of value when received by your congressperson. Include your personal story… your name and location, the type of music you listen to, and how this new royalty will affect you. Be as specific as you possibly can.

-Though it’s not nearly as effective as a postmarked letter, you can also send an e-mail message to your Senators and Representatives. With your zipcode or address, you can use this quick, easy e-mail form to get directly to the congressperson for your location: congress.org (use the form letter found there or write your own story)

I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for…iPhone?

Last night, a friend of mine was telling me how excited he is about the iPhone. So excited, in fact, that he is actually considering switching his service over to Cingular to get one - and he even considers clicking on the spam comments on his myspace page when they mention it, even though he KNOWS they are spam.

So I figured…a little further investigation is in order. What makes the iPhone so dang great?

iphone.jpg

Well, first of all, as you can see from the above pic…it’s sleek and stylish as hell. From a design perspective, lack of buttons has definitely helped it aesthetically…whether it serves the iPhone well functionally all lies within how seamless the touchscreen technology turns out to be.

The main draw of the iPhone, however, lies in the addition of iPod technology to the phone-slash-wireless internet capabilities already available across the board in everything from Treo to Blackberry to Sidekick. It’s tempting to be able to scale down the mobile devices you carry around with you, sure. So if your phone suddenly becomes your iPod as well…mazel tov! It all lies in how well it ends up working when it is “out of beta” - so to speak - and in the hands of consumers. So, we’ll see.

Basically, we’ve figured out two things here today -

1) If the iPhone lives up to hype, it’s gonna be the sexiest piece of technology to hit the market this year, and

2) Jd is a spammer’s dream come true. (Don’t you wish I’d linked to his myspace page? :D )

Pink Zune - $249.99

pink-zune.jpg

The pink Zune, which a lot of other techgirlies have been waiting on for a while and which was not supposed to be released until May, can now be purchased from Amazon for a retail price of $249.99. Or, if you are someone who feels comfortable buying from individual sellers on Amazon, you could pick one up for $209 at last check.

For those not yet in the know, what sets Zunes apart from other digital media players is the sharing and community capabilities. Think “ipod meets myspace.” You can wirelessly share full length tracks and pictures Zune to Zune - pretty cool!

Here are the deets -

  • Supported Standards: WMA, AAC, MP3
  • Capacity: 30 gig
  • Hardware Platform: PC
  • Battery Average Life: 14 Hours
  • Width: 2.4 inches
  • Depth: 0.6 inches
